12 noon at Clarksdale's Carnegie Library this Saturday Feb 6th, Kristian Gustavson will be talking about the Atchafalaya River Expedition Feb 7-15, 2010. Come and hear about Kristian's adventures!  He paddled the Mississippi in 2008, stopped in Helena & Clarksdale, visited Quapaw Canoe Company, and ate at Granny Dees.   I paddled with Kristian and his father for a couple of days in 2008.  He's a big fan of North Mississippi and its great food, culture & music.  He likes staying at the Shack Up Inn and going to Red's and Ground Zero for music & the vibes. In fact, he likes it so much he's bringing a writer and photographer from Reader's Digest magazine to help tell the story!

The Atchafalaya. America's biggest river swamp. 1.3 million acres.  Come & learn more about it and the water quality challenges facing the greater Mississippi Valley.

Coming From All Corners

Some by land and some by air, the Below The Surface team and new
friends are meandering their way across the open roads and vast skies
of America to unite in Clarksburg today. Bummed for missing an 1800
mile vegetable oil powered excursion across the desert and sometimes
suburban stretches of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and into
the forests of Arkansas and Mississippi, I am retracing Kristian and
Guy's recent highway ramble from the eagles view. Rested on my perch
(or soft faux leather chair in the Phoenix airport), I gaze out across
desert just heating up for the day and my thoughts drift to a wet rain
soaked part of the country I have yet to see, and my mind wonders at
the beauty and dangers we'll encounter while we re-explore the modern
Atchafalaya.

See y'all in Clarksburg.

BTS Atchafalaya Expedition - John Ruskey and Cowboy Coffee

Slept well at the Quapaw Canoe Company headquarter's new hostel and awoke to find a thermos of cowboy coffee and milk from our gracious host and legendary riverman, John Ruskey. "G'mornin' Mateys! Frrresh Cowboy Coffee I'm headed for groceries Give a holler if ya need anything." - John
The coffee kickstarts my heart and as I stare out at the grey skies and endless downpour, the reality of the Expedition sets in. The local paper described our team as "Surfer dudes meet Muddy Waters" and staring out the window at the Sunflower River, I get a first glimpse of the silty, turbid waters of the south. With memories of the Mississippi Blues from the classic Ground Zero bar fresh in my mind, I set into repacking my gear and await the return of John Ruskey. Today the rest of the Expedition team arrives and tomorrow we will help present the dugout canoe process to local school children. At noon, Kristian Gustavson will present his synopsis of the river with, "Signs of the Crossroads..."

The SUP Spot and Below The Surface hit the Airwaves

Jodie Nelson - professional surfer and owner of the The SUP Spot is bringing the sport of surfing into the Atchafalaya River and awareness of the impact of river pollution and sediment blockages to the surfing community. She has generously offered her "Mean Green Machine" a 12 foot long Stand Up Paddleboard to Below The Surface for our expedition this week.

Check out the news on it at Surfline.
